Exploring the Best of Morocco by 4×4, Motorbike, & Buggy

There’s no better way to explore Morocco than from the seat of a motorbike or buggy, riding straight into the country’s wildest landscapes. Forget bustling cities and coastal breaks — those can come later. We’re talking about thrilling, high-octane Morocco tours that take you deep into the raw soul of this captivating country: its open desert, remote villages, twisting mountain passes, and starlit skies.

At Motor Adventures, our enduro and adventure tours scale the High Atlas Mountains and conquer the Sahara Desert. Whether you’re looking for steep climbs, towering sand dunes, rocky tracks, or cultural gems hidden far from the crowds, you’ll find them all here.

Let’s get started on our picks for the best Morocco desert experiences. Scroll down to get started, and please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions!

Ride the Erg Chebbi Dunes near Merzouga

If you’re coming to Morocco for off-road riding, the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga are an undoubted highlight. These massive, wind-sculpted dunes stretch up to 150 metres high and create a breathtaking Sahara experience. Whether you’re carving through soft sand on an enduro bike or powering up the slopes in a buggy, this is one of Morocco’s most iconic playgrounds.

The sand is challenging but rewarding. It’s where many riders learn how to handle dune terrain for the first time, with our expert guides giving tips along the way. Add in the chance to stay in a desert bivouac and watch the sunset over the golden horizon, and it’s easy to see why this is one of the top places to see in Morocco.

Our signature Sahara Experience in Morocco (8 days riding) includes a visit to Erg Chebbi. Read through the full itinerary for an insight into the kind of unforgettable desert experience that’s waiting for you with Motor Adventures.

Cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass

For adventurers who enjoy smooth bends, big climbs, and epic scenery, the High Atlas Mountains deliver. The Tizi n’Tichka Pass is an iconic route winding over 2,200 metres above sea level, and it’s one of our off-tour highlights.

This mountain pass links Marrakech with Ouarzazate (where our Morocco tours start and finish) via a route through the mountains, making it the most direct link between the Red City and the “Door to the Desert”. While we don’t ride here, anyone transferring from Marrakech to Ouarzazate before or after their tour will do so via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass.

The winding pass separates the Marrakech Plain and the Sahara Desert, making it a remarkable transition point between the green valleys of the north and the dry, red landscapes of the south.

Our High Peaks and Desert Morocco Motorcycle Tour (5 days riding) is just one example of how you can transfer between Marrakech and Ouarzazate via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass on your arrival day. But read the full itinerary when you have finished here to find out even more about this incredible mountain and desert experience!

Explore the Remote Beauty of Jbel Saghro

Jbel Saghro sits between the High Atlas and the Sahara and feels like something from another planet. The landscape, dominated by dark volcanic rock and jagged peaks, is harsh and beautiful. The area even has its own “Monument Valley” in its austere, lunar-like terrain. These awe-inspiring formations quickly become highlights of entire trips for many of our guests.

Expect winding mountain trails that test your handling skills and major drop-offs as you head into the valley below. If you’re after real Morocco off-road adventures with jaw-dropping grandeur, this is the place.

Jbel Saghro features on several of our off-road tours, including the Buggy and Bike Safari Tour in Morocco (6 days riding).

Experience Real Moroccan Hospitality in Historic Kasbahs

Thrills in Morocco aren’t just about the riding — they’re also about where you eat your meals and rest your head at night. That’s why our carefully crafted routes include hand-picked kasbahs and guesthouses that bring you closer to Morocco’s heritage and culture.

Many are family-run and centuries old, with thick mud-brick walls, open courtyards, and rooftop terraces looking out over the valleys or desert. You’ll eat fresh, authentic, home-cooked meals, warm up by the fire, and hear stories from locals who’ve lived in these remote regions their whole lives.

Whether you’re winding down after a long day or starting early with strong coffee and a view, these places are a key part of what makes our experiences so fulfilling. All our tours in Morocco include stays in converted kasbahs, some of which are over 200 years old! This includes our only adventure motorbike tour in Morocco, too, the Happy Valley, Atlas Mountains and Sahara Desert Tour.

Conquer the Dades Gorge and See the “Monkey Fingers”

If you’re chasing tight, twisty roads and deep canyons, the Dades Gorge delivers. Famous for its hairpin switchbacks and steep cliffs, it’s a dream for bikers and a thrill for buggy riders, too.

Just nearby, the famous “Monkey Fingers” rock formations offer a surreal backdrop for photos or a quick hike. This incredible gorge is one of the most dramatic parts of any tour and a real contrast to the open desert that follows.

So, on which of our tours can you experience the Dades Gorge? Easy… all of them! Find out more by reading about the Morocco Desert Quest Tour (6 days riding), or any of our other excursions.

Step Into Film History at Morocco’s Aït Ben Haddou

Aït Ben Haddou is one of Morocco’s most famous ksars — an ancient fortified village made of earth and stone. And there’s a good chance you’ve probably seen it as it features in films like Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven, as well as Game of Thrones. But seeing it up close is something else.

For the time being, Aït Ben Haddou only features on our Happy Valley, Atlas Mountains and Sahara Desert Tour, which is an adventure motorbike tour, not an enduro excursion. It’s a highly popular stop with guests and makes for a great rest point and photo opportunity. You can climb to the top of the ksar for a panoramic view of the Ounila Valley, or explore the narrow alleys that run through this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Enjoy Traditional Moroccan Cuisine in the Desert

Long days on the trail are rewarded with proper food. Our tours include authentic Moroccan meals served in desert auberges, bivouac camps, and mountain kasbahs. Expect slow-cooked tajines, grilled meats, fresh salads, and flatbreads straight from clay ovens. Meals are a chance to refuel, relax, and connect with your fellow riders and guides.

In the desert, dinner under the stars with nothing but dunes and silence around you is one of the best desert experiences in Morocco. You won’t find that at a hotel buffet.
