Off-Road Trip in Morocco: Classics and Hidden Treasures

When it comes to off-road adventures, Morocco is hard to beat. Sand dunes, rugged mountain passes, and open desert tracks; it’s a playground for anyone who loves two wheels, four wheels, and the feeling of freedom. Motor Adventures’ motorbike and buggy tours in Morocco bring together this incredible country’s most famous sights and its quietest corners, offering riders the chance to experience both the highlights and hidden gems of this incredible country.

This is your Morocco motorcycle travel guide to the best-known routes and the lesser-known experiences waiting beyond them. Scroll down to get started! And if any questions come to mind as we go, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

The Big-Hitters: Morocco’s Off-Road Classics

Every off-road trip in Morocco includes some essential landscapes. These are the places that define the country’s reputation as one of the world’s top riding destinations. They’re vast, beautiful, and unforgettable.

The Sahara Desert

No Morocco off-road adventure is complete without tackling the Sahara. All of our Morocco motorcycle tours venture out into the desert, heading deep into awe-inspiring landscapes. This includes time around two of the Sahara’s most famous ergs: the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga and Erg Chigaga near M’hamid.

These golden sand giants stretch as far as the eye can see and are perfect for testing your skill and balance in the soft sand. Both locations offer challenging but incredibly rewarding rides, and at Erg Chebbi, you can attempt to conquer Morocco’s tallest sand dunes, which stand at a mighty 150 meters (492 feet) tall.

It’s no surprise, then, that the Sahara Desert is a highlight of any Morocco desert motorcycle tour! Read our blog Why You Must Take a Tour of Morocco’s Sahara Desert to find out more about visiting this special place.

The High Atlas Mountains

If the Sahara is all about open horizons, the High Atlas is about height and drama. Riders wind their way through hairpin bends, over rocky passes, and into green valleys overlooked by snow-dusted peaks. The High Atlas soar to over 4,000m above sea level, so the terrain changes quickly here, keeping things interesting from one turn to the next.

Yes, some sections are paved rather than off-road, like the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass, but if you love riding in all its forms, you won’t want to miss these winding mountain routes. They not only pose a different challenge for riders, but they also link some of the best dirt tracks and mountain passes, creating a complete riding experience.

Our signature tour, the Sahara Experience, includes rides in the High Atlas and the Sahara. If you want to enjoy both of these unmissable experiences, find out more by reading the full itinerary.

Experience True Moroccan Hospitality in a Kasbah

The magic of Morocco isn’t just in the trails and dunes; it’s also in the places you pause, eat, and sleep. Our routes are designed to include carefully selected kasbahs and guesthouses that immerse you in Morocco’s heritage.

Many of these are family-run, centuries-old buildings with thick mud-brick walls, open courtyards, and rooftop terraces overlooking valleys, mountains, or desert landscapes. Here, you’ll enjoy fresh, home-cooked meals, gather around a warm fire, and hear stories from locals who have lived in these regions for generations.

Whether it’s winding down after a day on the bike or starting early with strong coffee and a breathtaking view, these kasbah stays are a highlight in themselves. Every Morocco tour we offer includes nights in converted kasbahs, some over 200 years old, making them a truly memorable part of the adventure.

Beyond the Guidebook: Morocco’s Hidden Treasures

What makes Motor Adventures’ Morocco off-road tours stand out isn’t just the iconic sights. It’s the moments between them, like the remote trails, the tiny Berber villages, and the landscapes that don’t make it into travel brochures.

The Anti-Atlas Mountains

The Anti-Atlas is less visited than the High Atlas, but it’s just as spectacular. Here, the trails twist through rugged red rock formations and small Berber settlements that seem untouched by time. This is raw, remote Morocco, with jagged rock formations, volcanic landscapes, and dry riverbeds that challenge and reward riders of all abilities.

The Anti-Atlas trails are rougher, and there’s a sense of true wilderness, where you can ride for hours without seeing anyone. That disconnection, combined with the unique landscapes, makes the Anti-Atlas off-road Morocco experience one of the best-kept secrets for adventure riders.

Lac Maider

In the far southeast, Lac Maider is a wide, flat, dry soda lake that feels like another planet. When you ride across its surface, surrounded by rolling desert and distant hills, you’ll get a sense of Morocco’s wild beauty. It’s a favourite stop on our Morocco Desert Quest. Here, we enjoy a lunchtime picnic in a desert auberge that perfectly captures the freedom of off-road travel.

Morocco’s Berber Villages and Local Life

Riding off-road in Morocco also means connecting with local culture far from the tourist trail. Small mountain villages and desert outposts are dotted across our favourite routes, where riders can stop for mint tea and see traditional life up close. These are the places that turn a great trip into an unforgettable one.

What to Expect on a Motor Adventures Tour

Motor Adventures’ Morocco off-road tours are built for riders who want real adventure without the stress of going it alone. You’ll tackle everything from sand tracks and rocky climbs to fast, open plains. The terrain changes constantly, and so does the scenery.

Each day brings a mix of riding and discovery. You’ll cross remote areas with full support from experienced guides and well-stocked backup vehicles, meaning you can focus purely on the thrill of the ride. Accommodation ranges from desert camps under the stars to comfortable local hotels and guesthouses.

If you’re looking for a balanced mix of adrenaline-pumping rides and cultural immersion, you’ll love our carefully crafted itineraries. They combine the essence of desert riding with the beauty of Morocco’s jaw-dropping landscapes.

Planning Your Morocco Off-Road Adventure

The best time for Morocco off-road tours is from September to May. During these months, the temperatures are cooler, and the conditions are ideal for both desert and mountain riding. Summer is too hot for most areas, especially around the Sahara, which is why we don’t run tours at this time of year. Don’t miss our guide to the best time to visit the Sahara Desert in Morocco for a deeper dive into this topic.

Riders should bring proper off-road gear, including lightweight but protective clothing, goggles, gloves, and suitable boots. A good level of fitness helps, but you don’t need to be an expert to enjoy the experience. When you browse our full range of Morocco bike and buggy tours, look for the “Recommended Clothing and Accessories” section on each tour page for a more detailed insight into what you need to pack.
