Why Every Adventurer Should Experience Morocco’s Erg Chebbi Dunes

There are certain moments on the Motor Adventure tours that stay with people long after the engines stop. For many riders and drivers, the first sight of the Erg Chebbi dunes is one of them.

After leaving the Atlas Mountains behind, riding off-road across vast plains, crossing several smaller mountain ranges, and descending into the Sahara, the landscape suddenly changes. Giant waves of orange sand rise on the horizon. The scale is almost impossible to grasp at first.

For guests joining our motorbike and buggy tours, or our Sahara Experience in Morocco, the Erg Chebbi dunes are more than just a photo stop. They are the emotional and visual heart of the journey.

Whether you arrive on an enduro bike, in a Can-Am buggy, or in a 4WD, this part of the tour leaves a lasting impression. Let us explain…

What Makes Morocco’s Erg Chebbi Dunes So Special?

When it comes to the most famous Sahara desert dunes in Morocco, Erg Chebbi is hard to beat. Located near Merzouga in our country’s southeast, the peaks here reach as high as 150 metres.

And they’re constantly evolving, shaped by the whims of the desert wind.

But what makes them unforgettable is the contrast. One moment, you’re crossing rocky desert terrain and ancient dry plains. Next, you’re surrounded by enormous rolling dunes stretching into the distance.

The colours shift throughout the day, from deep orange and gold to soft red tones at sunset.

The silence is another thing people remember. Once the engines stop, the desert becomes incredibly still. That feeling of space, light, and isolation is why the Erg Chebbi dunes sit at the centre of so many Morocco desert riding dreams.

If you want to learn more about the dunes themselves, you can also read our guide to visiting Morocco’s Erg Chebbi sand dunes.

Riding the Erg Chebbi Dunes is Unlike Anything Else

Sand riding changes everything. On hard-packed trails, you can focus on precision and line choice. In the dunes, momentum becomes your best friend.

The surface moves beneath you constantly. Climbs, descents, soft patches, and ridgelines all demand concentration, commitment, and trust in your machine.

That challenge is exactly why riders love it, and why we recommend trying to improve your off-road riding or driving before the Sahara Experience.

The Morocco off-road dunes around Erg Chebbi create a riding experience that feels completely different from forests, gravel roads, or mountain trails elsewhere in the world.

Some of the highlights include:

  • Fast dune crossings
  • Technical climbs and descents
  • Endless open views
  • Ever-changing terrain
  • The feeling of complete freedom

And because the dunes are always shifting, no two days are ever the same.

Bikes, Buggies, and 4WDs — Completely Different Erg Chebbi Experiences

One of the strengths of the Sahara Experience is that guests can explore Erg Chebbi in different ways.

Enduro Bikes

For many biker guests, this is the purest version of Morocco desert riding. When you choose one of our bikes, you feel every movement of the terrain beneath you. Standing on the pegs, working through the sand, and cresting dunes under your own control creates a genuine sense of achievement.

The bike reacts instantly to the surface, giving you a direct connection to the desert that is both physical and exhilarating. It is demanding, immersive, and hugely rewarding — the kind of riding where every horizon invites you to push a little further.

Can-Am Buggies

Our buggies bring a different kind of excitement. The dunes are where they truly come alive. This is the terrain they’re built for. Fast, stable, and confidence-inspiring in soft sand, they let the buggy drivers enjoy the dunes at speed while sharing the adventure with their co-driver. They’re perfect for anyone who wants adrenaline and exploration without needing years of riding experience. Our guides explain the technique clearly, and once people get the hang of it, they’re hooked. Before long, they’re carving lines through the sand, climbing ridge after ridge, and chasing the thrill of “just one more dune.”

4WD Vehicles

Even from inside our 4WDs, the vastness of Erg Chebbi is overwhelming. The dunes rise like soft golden mountains, and the scale becomes even more striking when you realise how small the vehicles look against them.

Motorbikes and buggies can climb all the way to the dune crests, but that doesn’t make the 4WD journey any less exciting. In fact, the adventure is different, and just as memorable. Our Toyota Land Cruiser Prados spend long stretches carving their way through soft sand, sliding on the descents, and weaving through remote corridors of the dunes that you can only reach with skilled off-road driving.

It’s a kind of immersion you feel through the movement of the car: the engine working, the tyres floating over the sand, the landscape shifting with every curve. Reaching the desert hotels or navigating the day passages becomes part of the experience, a continuous dance with the terrain rather than a straight route from A to B.

Johnny’s Bar — Sunset in Erg Chebbi’s Dunes

Let’s just be clear: there is no actual bar in the middle of the Sahara. Johnny’s Bar is simply what we call one of the most memorable moments of the tour.

At sunset, the group stops at the top of a towering dune. Drinks are handed out. Engines fall quiet. Everyone sits together, watching the light change across the sand as the sun disappears behind the horizon.

It’s simple, but that’s exactly why it works. It’s also just one of the reasons that make a Motor Adventures tour different.

After riding through the Erg Chebbi dunes, the silence and stillness are the perfect way to end the day. It becomes one of those moments our guests still talk about years later.

The Emotional Side of Morocco’s Sahara Desert

The dunes affect people in ways they do not always expect. Part of it is the scale. Part of it is the quiet. Part of it is spending days away from normal routines, screens, traffic, and noise.

The Sahara has a way of slowing everything down.

For some guests, the dunes are the highlight because of the riding challenge. For others, it’s the sense of perspective that comes with being surrounded by nothing but sand and sky.

Either way, the experience stays with you.
