How to Pass South Africa’s Sani Pass

Few roads in the world inspire the same mix of awe and adrenaline as the Sani Pass in South Africa. Perched high in the Drakensberg Mountains, this winding route climbs nearly 1,400 metres in around 9 kilometres, linking KwaZulu-Natal with the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. It’s one of the most famous riding challenges on the continent, and one of the final highlights on our Sea to Summit 10-Day South African Motorcycle Tour.

If you’re wondering what it’s really like to ride the Sani Pass, here’s a breakdown of what makes it so special, what you need to know before tackling it, and why completing it as part of a guided tour is the ultimate way to take it on.

Scroll down to get started! And if you have any questions for the Motor Adventures team at any point, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Where is the Sani Pass and Why is It Famous?

The Sani Pass connects the small South African town of Underberg with Mokhotlong in Lesotho. It’s the only road crossing between the two regions, and for riders, it’s a bucket-list experience that delivers both challenge and reward in equal measure. It’s a huge reason why South Africa is one of the best countries to go motorcycle touring.

The climb starts at around 1,500 metres above sea level and finishes at 2,876 metres at the Lesotho border post. The route is short but steep, twisting and turning through rocky switchbacks, gravel beds, and sometimes muddy surfaces that change with the weather.

Originally, this wasn’t a route for vehicles at all. It was created in the 1930s as a trading path for Basotho herders who used donkeys to carry goods down into South Africa. In fact, a motor vehicle didn’t complete the route until around 1950. But once one did, its legend began to grow.

Over the years, Sani Pass has become one of the most iconic off-road drives and a legendary test for motorcyclists taking on adventure riding in South Africa. This incredible country has hundreds of mountain passes, but the Sani Pass is the hardest, steepest, and most unforgettable.

What Makes Riding the Sani Pass So Special?

Riding the Sani Pass is unlike any other experience in South Africa. The views change constantly as you climb — from montane grasslands and Afromontane forest to jagged cliffs that drop away below you. Speaking of drops, you’ll be flanked by a steep drop-off for the entire journey, so make sure you’re prepared!

The higher you go, the rougher the terrain becomes. In the dry months, you’ll be kicking up dust and gravel; after rain, there might be puddles, mud, or small streams to cross. With names like Devil’s Corner and Suicide Bend on the short but intense route, you get some idea of the ride you’re in for.

At the top sits Sani Mountain Escape, home to the Highest Pub in Africa. It’s a fitting reward for anyone who’s conquered the climb and always a welcome sight for riders looking to unclench. The altitude can bring thin air and cool winds, but awe-inspiring views stretch for miles across both South Africa and Lesotho.

For many riders, it’s a rite of passage; a road that tests your skill, patience, and nerve, but rewards you with memories that last a lifetime.

How to Prepare for Riding the Sani Pass

Preparation is key on a route like this. While the Sani Pass in South Africa is open to adventure riders, conditions demand respect and proper planning.

Your Bike and Gear

A dual-sport or adventure bike is ideal on the Sani Pass. You’ll need tyres with good tread, as the terrain shifts between gravel, rock, and occasionally mud. A skid plate and crash protection are also highly recommended. When you join Motor Adventures on our South Africa adventure tours, you will ride a Triumph Tiger 900 Pro. Our bikes are designed for diverse terrains, offering reliability, exceptional performance, and proven safety.

And pack for all conditions! It can be warm at the base, then windy or cold at the summit, even in summer. Layers work best, along with waterproof gloves and a solid riding jacket.

Rider Skills and Comfort

You don’t need to be a professional off-roader, but you should have at least intermediate off-road riding experience. Confidence on rough terrain will go a long way. Steady throttle control and a relaxed stance are key. The climb is steep and can get slippery, so it’s all about smooth, controlled progress rather than speed.

On our Sea to Summit South Africa motorcycle tour, an experienced guide leads the way and a support vehicle sweeps up behind. Our team knows this route well, we’re familiar with weather patterns, and we know how to handle unexpected changes in terrain. With our support and advice, you’re free to focus on the ride itself.

Paperwork and the Lesotho Border Crossing

At the top of the Sani Pass sits an official Lesotho border crossing. You’ll need your passport and your bike’s documentation (ownership papers or rental agreement).

If you’re riding with Motor Adventures, we handle all the admin on your behalf. The group clears customs together, ensuring everything runs smoothly. You’ll get your exit stamp from South Africa at the bottom post and your Lesotho entry stamp at the top — a process that typically takes just a few minutes when organised properly.

Current Sani Pass Road Conditions

While the Sani Pass has a world-famous reputation in the biking community, the good news is that it hasn’t lost its character. The lower section from the border post at South Africa’s base has been partially tarred, which makes for a smoother start. But from there, it’s still the real deal. Think loose gravel, rocky climbs, and sharp turns all the way up.

Weather plays a big role in Sani Pass road conditions. In summer (October to March), heavy rain can wash out sections or make the surface slick. In winter (June to August), ice and even snow can make the upper section treacherous. Temperatures can drop fast as you climb, so always check the forecast before setting off.

If you’re riding with Motor Adventures, you won’t have to worry about road conditions or the weather forecast. Our team keeps a close eye on both and always puts your safety on our South Africa adventure tours first.
